A tornado can appear any time throughout the year. Tornados are more likely to occur in the late winters through midsummer, depending upon your location in the United States.

Whenever you receive information of a tornado warning in your area, don’t take any chances. The inhabitants of the apartment should avoid windows and move towards the lowest floor of the apartment or a small room in the center of the apartment, a staircase, or a central windowless hall. After reaching a safe place, kneel down and cover the back of your head with your hands. Bring some thick padding like a blanket or a fluffy mattress that will guard you against any flying or falling debris. Pay close attention before choosing the location of your apartment, as some apartments also have a community tornado shelter which is the preferred location to take cover in.

Hurricane Safety for Apartments

The season of hurricanes is among the most perilous time of year. Strong winds, stormy tides, and flooding are all great threats to people residing in areas susceptible to hurricanes. If your apartment falls in an evacuation zone and you receive an evacuation order, it is best for you to follow it rather than waiting for the storm to end. Sometimes the ones who stay behind in a hurricane have to suffer much more serious circumstances than those who evacuated.

However, if you find yourself stuck in your apartment during a hurricane, move to a small central room like a bathroom, closet, or to the hall with no windows on the lowest level of your apartment. Keep an emergency kit with you and keep listening to the radio for news updates.

Apartment Flooding Safety

Floods can cause great harm. Floods usually occur if your apartment is in a flood zone or near dams. When there are active flood warnings in your area, remain updated by listening to your radio or TV, and pay serious attention to the warnings. If you need to evacuate your apartment during a flood, disconnect all the dry electrical appliances, place the basic necessities as high as you can and avoid walking or driving through flowing water.

The other issue that residents should be concerned about is internal apartment flooding caused due to the plumbing problems. If you face a problem with a flooded apartment, inform your landlord and deal with the problem as quickly as possible.

Apartment Earthquake Safety

If your apartment in an area prone to earthquakes, you should be well aware that they can be terrifying, regardless of their frequency. To prepare your apartment for earthquakes, place large, heavy, and the other breakable items on lower shelves.Make sure to securely fasten any mirrors or picture frames to your walls.

And whenever an earthquake occurs, move to the ground level and move into a door frame, against an inside wall, or seek shelter beneath a strong furniture item. Remain at a distance from windows, heavy lighting structures, and the outside. Do not use an elevator during an earthquake.
